The books were released as Midtown Exclusive variants a month apart, and the first is a key issue capturing the death of Peter Parker. For those not familiar with the history and lore, this is a key issue marking the end of over 50 years of the classic Amazing Spider-Man (ASM) series. In ASM 700, Doctor Octopus, Spider-man's nemesis is dying of old age and injuries from years of fighting heroes like Spider-man. In his last days he wishes to cement his own legacy and manages to switch consciousness with Peter Parker, leaving him to die in his own frail body and taking over Peter Parker's Spider-man!
However, his exposure to Peter Parker's memories causes him to turn a new leaf and maintain the same values Spider-man fought for as a superhero. He makes good on his vow to Peter Parker to be an even better, "superior" Spider-man in the continuing Superior Spider-Man series.
This new storyline was so controversial during its time that it caused its writer, Dan Slott, to receive real life death threats!
