AVENGERS #16 - the day the founding team disbanded. Cover-dated May 1965, this is the issue that ends the Avengers as anyone had known them for its first eleven issues. Thor, Iron Man, Giant-Man, and the Wasp all walk out in the same story - and Stan Lee and Jack Kirby replace them with three reformed villains: Hawkeye, Quicksilver, and the Scarlet Witch.

Captain America, left holding a team of near-strangers, says it himself on the page. It's worth sitting with how strange that call was in 1965. Marvel had spent three years building the Avengers around its biggest names, then tore the roster up on purpose - betting that a solo super-soldier leading three ex-criminals could hold a book together on personality and tension instead of star power. It worked, and in one form or another it's the structure Marvel has kept returning to ever since: legacy heroes rotate out, new ones earn the name. A Sub-Mariner cameo closes the issue out, one more thread pulling toward the next several years of Avengers continuity. Kirby's cover does the rest of the work - the new four standing where the old four used to, composed so you register the substitution before you've read a word. This copy grades CGC 8.5, Very Fine+, with off-white to white pages - strong retention for a sixty-year-old newsstand book. A small pencil arrival notation ("3-11") on the front cover was factored into the assigned grade and is visible in the photos; a ComicLink dealer sticker from a prior sale sits on the exterior of the holder only and does not touch the book.
